Andros is the northernmost and the second largest island in the Cyclades complex. Being famous for its beautiful landscapes and beaches, Andros -which many confuse with the Bahaman island with the same name- is perfect for a quiet and serene visit. The exhibition at the Goulandris Museum could be a perfect opportunity to combine holidays with art.
Titled Paul Delvaux and the Antiquity the exhibition features 60 oil paintings and drawings from private and public collections in Europe and the United States as well as from major European institutions, such as the Delvaux Foundation and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium, which is also co-organizing the show together with the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation.
This is the first time that the oeuvre of this exceptionally important Belgian artist of the 20th century is shown to Greece in an exhibition. After Andros Paul Delvaux and the Antiquity will open at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (October 23, 2009–January 31, 2010).
Paul Delvaux contributed to modern art his very unique and personal expression, as far as the genre of the female nude is concerned. Further to this, he established new modulations regarding the space in which painting takes action. He pursued his pictorial stride within the symbolic codes of James Ensor, the mysterious
metaphysical tension of Giorgio de Chirico and the iconographic poetry of René Magritte and although he never accepted the full title of the surrealist painter, he is considered to be an established representative of this major artistic movement.
The exhibition focuses mainly on the references and the relations Delvaux developed with Greece, through the myths and the inexhaustible Greek subject-matter from which he systematically extracted facts and elements, in order to interweave his own personal, subjective mythology.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue in three different editions in Greek, English and French (Flemish will be also available in the exhibition in Brussels). The publication includes academic texts by the directors of both museums, Mr. Michel Draguet, and Mr. Kyriakos Koutsomallis, a text by the author Mr. Takis Theodoropoulos, as well as four thematic scientific analytical texts from renowned historians and academic professors.
Curator of the exhibition is Mr. Michel Draguet, director of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels.
